About Mountains-to-Sea Trail

Mountains-to-Sea Trail

The Mountains-to-Sea Trail (MST) stretches across North Carolina, offering a unique chance to experience the state's vast geographic diversity. It begins amidst the high peaks of the Great Smoky Mountains, traversing through national forests, state parks, and small towns, before leading to the sandy beaches of the Outer Banks. The trail showcases the ecological diversity of North Carolina—from its lush mountain forests and piedmont plains to its coastal barrier islands—making it a haven for hikers and nature enthusiasts. Established in 1977, the trail connects significant natural and cultural landmarks, including the Blue Ridge Parkway, Stone Mountain State Park, and the Cape Hatteras National Seashore. It also interweaves historic pathways and modern urban environments, providing varied recreational opportunities such as hiking, wildlife viewing, and photography. Thanks to the efforts of trail volunteer groups, the MST continues to enhance its accessibility and appeal.
